Woodburning Stove installed in my 1983 Ford Van

I installed this woodburning stove yesterday in my 1983 Ford Diesel Van. Ordinarilly the stove doesn't puff smoke inside the van this much, but I added some wet pine needles to have some smoke coming out the chimney just before filming. The stove is great for camping, hunting and fishing trips. I also spend a lot of time in and around the van at swap meets, flea markets, and festivals. I can open the side doors of the van, sit in the doorway and be toasty warm on the coldest of days. Having a woodstove going in the van requires constant vigilance and extreme caution. Definitely not something for everyone. The stove is not in use while driving. Ventilation is critical with an open fire going in such a small space. There's no room for error. My van only has one seat in front for the driver. The stove is centered where the passenger seat used to be, and there's plenty of clearance all around it. The stove weighs about 60 pounds and is all cast iron. It heats very well with just a very small amount of wood. The top surface is good for cooking or keeping a coffee pot hot too.

Easy to make wood gas candle made by folding aluminum foil. No tools or cutting cans needed. 30 minutes of fire with from just one handful of wood sticks. Very easy to light. No smoke. HOW DOES IT WORK? The match lights the alcohol which lights the tinder which lights the tip of the sticks. The sticks smolder but do not catch fire because there is not enough oxygen. The flame rises and draws up more smoke from the smoldering sticks and causes fresh air to enter through the small holes. This is the first boil test I have done with my stoves. It was a rolling boil at 6 minutes when I checked it. It was probably boiling with in 4 minutes I would guess. Will do more later. Still have a few ideas to modify it more.

Initial Thoughts: Stovetec 2 Door rocket/survival stove

Initial thoughts at first use of new Stovetec 2 door rocket stove. $125 on Ebay. Outside temperature about 38F and breeze. Burning very green alder branches and dry cedar. Fantastic stove for cooking and boiling. Not good for keeping people warm around as it radiated very little heat, but it isn't designed for that. I looked at hours of video of other stoves including the Volcano II tri fuel, but settled on this one for simplicity, control ability and requiring only tiny amounts of wood fuel without removing a heavy cooking pot. It is shocking how little fuel this thing uses.

Out playing again with my rocket stove, I timed how long it would take to boil 2 pints of cold water. It was 5 minutes and 15 seconds, I didn't think that was too bad. It was a similar time the night before, It obviously will vary a small amount depending on fuel used, amount of fuel, outside temperature, wind etc... This is not a large rocket stove and is pretty portable, you can use them to cook on. Heat water or keep warm by, especially if you put some sticks down the top into the tube and use a reflector to throw back some heat towards yourself. Something concave in shape like a large wok seems to work very well, angled slightly downwards or a few inches above the stove upside down. You would need to support it some how, but this tends to throw the heat 360 degrees. You would need to be fairly close to it to benefit, but it does work and is effective. Anyway towards the end of this video I have tried to get a closer look at the combustion chamber, check out the swirl of flames. It really mixes the gases well. I don't think that this is by any means the best that can be achieved and I'm sure that someone seeing this will be probably making something even better, but it was an idea I had and just wanted to try it out to see if it would fulfil my expectations. It has! I will be posting more stuff as soon as I can on my stove collection as well as my knife collection, along with more on other things as and when I can.
