woodgas camp stove demo
peplers.blogspot.com I recently bought this woodgas camp stove to use for cooking when we're in the woods, either working or just relaxing. It works by "gasifying" the wood, which means allowing in just a small amount of air at the base of the stove to partially burn the wood, converting it into a mixture of gases including hydrogen, methane and carbon monoxide (so don't use it indoors!). These gases are then burnt in a second supply of air, injected at the top of the stove, right underneath the cooking pan. In use I've found it has several advantages: - It uses a very small amount of wood, yet will burn for 30-40 minutes - it lights easily (once you've got the hang of it) - once lit, you can basically just forget about it, apart from stirring your dinner - it's easily portable - it'll run for hours (I'd guess 15) off a pair of good rechargeable AA batteries (I use a solar panel to recharge them). I'd recommend one of these stoves to anyone who cooks outdoors regularly! Note, this is the "XL" version of the stove, there's a slightly smaller version too, which is more portable, but burns with a tiny bit less heat and for a shorter time. Wood Stove - box stove: history
Among the first stoves developed in America, the box stove was initially seen during the revolutionary war and used to heat the colonist soldiers. The small box stove was light and portable making them highly valued. Because of their compact nature and highly efficient heating capabilities, the popularity of the box stove was wide spread in both public and private use. Heating school, churches and meetinghouses, the box stove also found significant residential use in utility rooms and workshops, kitchens and bathrooms. An airtight wood box stove can take logs or small wood chunks. A cook lid at the top offers additional conveniences. Castings on the side and front of the stove are reflective of a developing industry as casting and manufacturing techniques became increasingly refined.

DIY 4 in 1 Backpacking Wood Gas, Wood, Esbit and Alcohol Stove(s)
My DIY 4 in 1 Wood Gas, Wood, Esbit and Alcohol burning backpacking stove. Watching many YouTube videos on the subject I decided to come up with a version of my own. Mine borrows ideas and designs from J Falk and others - but I give special credit to Hiram Cook and his use of a Progresso soup can (for the Wood Gas chamber) that fits the 1 quart paint can perfectly. You need to visit his YouTube site, his work on stoves is amazing! (And be sure to check out his buddy Max). The stove(s) turned out okay for my first attempt. Making all of them fit into a GSI Dualist Cooking Set was an added bonus and a pleasant surprise. Hopefully you are able to get a view from all angles for each part of the stove as I spun them.

ESSE Ironheart Extended Wood Box 14hrs 2nd burn, Part 8
Here we show you the difference the Extended Wood Box makes when you burn wood in an ESSE Ironheart. The Ironheart was designed to burn wood or coal. It ships with heavy cast iron grates in the bottom of the firebox. This is great for coal, not for wood. For wood you want you hot coals to be in a bed of ash, so they hold their heat longer and don't burn as fast. For this we offer the ability to swap out the grates and replace them with the optional Extended Firebox. This unit will allow you to get more wood in the firebox, for longer burn times. Here you'll see how well it works and how we get a 14hr burn again on our 2nd burn.
